Austin has enforced a new law from October 1 under which the restaurants in the city will no longer be allowed to send their food waste to landfills.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the authorities have prescribed four methods of\u00a0organic waste diversion-<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>feeding hungry people by\u00a0donating extra food<\/li>\n<li>sending it to\u00a0be used for\u00a0animal feed to local animal farms or ranches<\/li>\n<li>composting on-site or with\u00a0a private service provider<\/li>\n<li>encouraging the development of customized solutions which diverts organic material from\u00a0landfills.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The ordinance also requires\u00a0that business owners\/managers provide regular education for employees and post informational signage. Additionally, they must submit an online Organic Diversion Plan each year.<\/p>\n<p>A 2015 Diversion Study conducted in Austin revealed\u00a0that more than 85% of the city\u2019s trash and recycling comes from commercial businesses, multifamily properties and food service establishments.
